Dear Name:

The Arizona Flight Training Workgroup is committed to being a good neighbor and we are hopeful that as an Arizona pilot you can join us in this effort.

Recently, noise complaints have increased dramatically at Phoenix Deer Valley Airport and other areas in and around local practice areas.  Area residents are extremely concerned about quality of life issues, as well as their families' safety.  The tragic events of September 11, 2001, also had an effect on the public's perception of flight training.

Area flight schools have taken a vital interest in helping residents with their struggle with aircraft noise.   Monthly flight instructor meetings reminding their pilots of the importance of flying friendly and avoiding residential areas when possible, this is becoming increasingly more difficult to accomplish with the development of new homes in desert areas.  Several flight schools have asked that their instructional flights stay above 3000 feet above ground level (AGL) when possible. This self-imposed rule has made a big difference to the residents.

Valley flight schools have committed to working with neighbors on noise issues and voluntary raising of minimum altitudes has become contagious.  Valley schools at Goodyear, Glendale, Deer Valley, Scottsdale, Falcon, Gateway and Chandler airports are encouraging their CFI's and students to follow AFTW's recommendations and to fly noise friendly.

We are hopeful that you can also follow this 3000-foot minimum guideline when flying in the North Valley.  Pilots with questions about this new initiative should visit AFTW's website at www.aftw.org

Thank you in advance for your commitment to fly friendly.

Sincerely,

AFTW members
